SNL Financial: HSBC maintains leading market cap position after tough H2 for equities

HSBC Holdings Plc proved resilient during the difficult second half of 2015, during which the SNL European Bank index fell 13.5%, maintaining its position as the most valuable European bank by market capitalization at Dec. 31, 2015, SNL data shows.

Its market cap was more than double that of the bank in second place, Lloyds Banking Group Plc.

Banco Santander SA shed more than 26% of its market cap between July and December, with Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria SA losing 23% and Standard Chartered Plc losing 29%. Meanwhile, Société Générale SA’s market cap increased by 1.7%, meaning it climbed to 13th, up from 18th at the end of June.
